That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
The scriptures above are known in theological circles as the ‘salvation prayer’ and the ‘salvation principle’. Keep that in mind for later.
Jesus said Himself in Mark 11:23 (paraphrased) ‘whosoever shall say to this mountain be removed and be cast into the sea and that if you don’t doubt in your heart, but believe what you say shall come to pass, you shall have whatever you say.’ Take note of say (mouth) and believe (heart).
In the very next verse Jesus says whatever you ask for in prayer, believe you that you have received it and you will have it. (Mark 11:24)
Think about this for a moment. It was the confessing of your mouth and believing in your heart Jesus is Lord, that brought salvation. Words from your heart got you saved. That’s so mind blowing! Those words catapulted you into Christ.
In Matthew 18:19 Jesus taught His disciples on prayer: ‘if any two agree on earth as touching anything, it will be done by my Father who is in heaven.’ It’s important to note that this was before the finished work of Christ.
Romans 10:10 shows us the result of our heart and mouth agreeing together: ‘for with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.’ The power of the right words.
Notice this example is referring to an individual confessing and believing, that brings them into the benefits of salvation. In Matthew 18:19 or the ‘prayer of agreement’ as it is commonly known, there had to be two people on earth in agreement to meet the conditions of the prayer.
This however was situated in the gospels that were an extension of the Old Testament up until after Jesus’ resurrection. In the New Testament, the ‘any two’ based upon Romans 10:9-10 are your heart and your mouth.
Do you know the full implication of this? It means all you need to do is get your heart and mouth to agree for the ‘salvation principle’ to work. You can’t say one thing and think the opposite at the same time. Your heart and mouth have to be in perfect synchronisation to have the desired outcome.
So how do we do this? It’s simple actually. Continue to fill our hearts with the word of God because the Master told us ‘out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks’ (Luke 6:45)
Concurrently, use your mouth to speak God’s word to your heart and bring it into alignment. David said ‘My tongue is the pen of a ready writer’(Psalm 45:1b).
Where are you supposed to write these words? On your heart. The good news is your heart and your mouth are all that are required. Now you know, what are you waiting for?
APPLICATION
Practice getting your heart and mouth to agree by meditating; studying, pondering, muttering and roaring the word to have the results that you desire through prayer.
