Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us. Romans 8:37 (AMPC)
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4 (NKJV)
There was a movie made in 2009. It was set after the fall of apartheid in 1990. With the nation of South Africa in disarray, President Nelson Mandela looked to the South African Rugby union team to bring the country together, blacks and whites and reunite this apartheid-torn land . The title of the film was called Invictus. It was the first World Cup South Africa was allowed to compete in and they won all six games beating New Zealand in the final to become world champions.
The term invictus is Latin and it means unconquerable and undefeatable.
All throughout history there are records of those who were conquerors. The likes of Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun and Alexander the Great and Charlemagne to name a few. Now consider that everyone of these historical conquerors were eventually conquered. There is one who is not on the list however that has never been conquered or defeated. His name is the Lord Jesus Christ.
So He is the greatest conqueror who ever lived and He is alive today. He conquered Satan, death and the grave and He did it for us. Therefore He is the conqueror. I’m always astounded when I think of the fact that Apostle Paul could think of no stronger word than ‘conquerors’ so to describe believers. He even said we are ‘more than conquerors’. This was the most powerful construction that Paul could create. Remarkable.
Why are we more than conquerors? Because we are now living in the perpetual aftermath of the victory that Jesus won for us in his death, burial and resurrection. There is nothing or no one left to conquer that Jesus has not already conquered. Let that sink in for a moment.
Another reason is because we carry the same spiritual D.N.A. as God. This is where some religious folks check out and say this is too much, you’ve gone too far, or my personal favourite; who do you think you are?
‘I am born of God’. This is a statement you can boldly declare if you are in Christ. The next part is then equally true ‘I overcome the world’. This means I am now a natural born overcomer.
1 Peter 1:23 says we are ‘born not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible by the Word of God that lives and abides forever’. Seed here means sperm so it’s talking about the life that we received by the Living Word Jesus Christ.
1 John 4:4a says ‘you are of God little children and HAVE overcome them.’ This means your genealogy is now traced from God’s D.N.A. Notice ‘have’ means you too like Jesus have already overcome them. Past tense. Who are them? Every spirit that tries to comes against you. Why have you already overcome them? Because Christ overcame them all and you were in Him in the mind of justice when He did it.
2 Corinthians 2:14 says ‘But thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph [as trophies of Christ’s victory] and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere,’
So what is the man in Christ? Invictus. Unconquerable and undefeatable. When we begin to mediate on these realities, we understand how indestructible we have become through the finished work of salvation. We cannot be defeated by death or the grave when we have Christ as our eternal security and assurance.
You may not feel like more than a conqueror or an overcomer but let me say this. Feelings lie and are not a sure guide. Be encouraged today. Whatever God says that you are, you are, and nothing or nobody can change it! Rather than wait for a feeling, act on His Word. Start telling yourself that you are who God says you are and don’t change your confession no matter what and keep winning.
APPLICATION
Develop a ‘more than a conqueror’ mentality, be renewed in the attitude of your mind and refuse to be deceived out of the victory that is forever yours in Christ Jesus.
