And I give them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or perish throughout the ages. [To all eternity they shall never by any means be destroyed.] And no one is able to snatch them out of My hand. My Father, Who has given them to Me, is greater and mightier than all [else]; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of the Father’s hand. John 10:28-29 (AMPC)

Therefore He is able also to save forever (completely, perfectly, for eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede and intervene on their behalf [with God]. Hebrews 7:25 (AMP)

When we look into subject of Salvation, there are questions that frequently get asked. What is it, how do I receive it and can I lose it? To answer these we need to start by defining the word itself.

Soteria in Greek, it means to rescue, save, deliver, preserve and even health. It also implies that salvation is the possession of the believer. All these are synonymous with salvation but there is so much more.

So what else describes salvation? Here are just a few examples. It is a gift of abundant grace (Romans 5:17). Being born of the Spirit (John 3:6) It is becoming a new creation with a new life. (2 Corinthians 5:17). We call this the new birth. (1 Peter 1:3).

He saved us from sin and death by delivering us out of darkness and into light. Take note of something here. Part of our salvation was what Jesus did on our behalf. The other aspect is who we became when His work of salvation was completed.

Because salvation came in the person of Jesus Christ, we must accept Him as Lord and Saviour to receive it. Rather than just what is salvation, the question could also be asked as who is salvation? So now we have established briefly what salvation is and how we receive it.

The next question is: can we lose our salvation? To answer this definitively we need to go back to the scriptures. Sometimes I wonder what people are seeing when they read their Bibles. When you study the Word diligently, you will find that there is nothing that suggests losing your salvation is even a possibility.

What part of Jesus saying in John 10:27-28 ‘And I give them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or perish throughout the ages.’ is not clear, or Jesus saying ‘no one is able to snatch them out of My hand and no one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand’ is in any way confusing?

Hebrews 7:25 strengthens this argument by saying of Jesus ‘He is able also to save forever (completely, perfectly, for eternity) those who come to God through Him.’

Can we lose our salvation? Emphatically no! I have good news for you. Salvation and the effects of salvation are irreversible. Think about it. You never made it happen; He did. If that is true then you are not able to undo what God in Christ has done for you.

When a baby has been born you can’t reverse the effects of the pregnancy like it never happened. The baby is birthed and can’t be unbirthed. It is the same with salvation.

Once you have personalised His salvation you are born of the Spirit, eternal life is imparted into you that can never be destroyed. Not only that, you have become one Spirit with the Lord (1 Corinthians 6:17). The truth is, you couldn’t lose your salvation if you tried.

Be encouraged. What God has done in salvation He has done forever. You can’t mess up what He did in saving you and bringing you into vital union with Him by the Holy Spirit.

If you were in doubt, I hope you breathe easier now. Rest assured. Jesus loves you, the Father loves you and if you are in Christ no one can separate you from or snatch you out of God’s loving hand.
