She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
“Who touched me?” Jesus Christ asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at His feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched Him and how she had been instantly healed. Luke 8:44-47 (NIV)
Let’s look at healing from a different perspective today.
The Bible says this woman spent all her money on physicians but was no better. She had this hemorrhagic condition for twelve long years. It was in this state that she actually met Jesus as he was on his way to raise Jairus’ daughter.
Now the law said that she was unclean and so she had to stay outside the city walls along with the lepers and other social outcasts. The act of coming into the city to make contact with a ‘clean’ person was punishable by death. She heard that Jesus was performing miracles and therefore she said to herself ‘If I can just touch the hem of His garment I know I will be healed’.
This was an illegal encounter that was an interruption into Jesus’ pre-arranged schedule. Notice she didn’t even ask to be prayed for or touched by Jesus. This woman who is nameless, knew she was on a suicide mission if she was to be caught.
I believe her name is not recorded because it shows that God is no respecter of persons. He is ‘generous to all without finding fault’ as James 1:5 tells us. She was breaking the law of Moses by even being there yet Jesus ignored that fact and she got what she risked her very life for; her miracle. Such a stark contrast between law and grace.
How? Romans 10:17 gives us some insight.
‘Therefore faith comes by hearing the word of God’ or more accurately, the message of Christ.
What did she hear? The good news of Jesus and how He was ‘anointed with the Holy Ghost and power and He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil for God was with Him’ (Acts 10:38)
This is how faith came to this woman and it is the same way faith comes today; through the message of Christ in salvation which includes within it deliverance, healing etc.
Another thing to take note of is in her desperation, she interrupted the Master and created a moment for her faith in Christ to be realised. She didn’t wait for Jesus to come to her or else she might have never gotten healed She seized her opportunity.
Imagine Jesus walking through Jerusalem in the power of the Spirit just waiting for someone to plug into the power that was resident within Him. All the people in the crowd that day yet only one person took advantage of it.
Jesus was like a power house that had all the electricity flowing through it and all that was needed was for someone to connect to the source of power; and she did. Jesus knew power or virtue had left Him because although many were pressing Him in the crowd, He said ‘who touched me?’ Just one in faith.
It’s the same in the Body of Christ today. Believers are walking around with the power of God on the inside, the same Holy Spirit and sadly, not many are taking advantage of the power that is working in them.
Christians are supposed to be declaring their own healing and keeping their bodies in health. Those who are not Christians should be the ones to plug into the power by hearing the message of Christ. Sometimes we have it back to front.
Until believers grow up however, they will have to believe in someone else to facilitate their healing that still can only come by their personal faith in Christ or someone using the name. The heir ‘as long as he is a child is no different to a slave…’ (Galatians 4:1)
In Christ you are saved and have received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. To walk in the fulness of our salvation though, we need to build ourselves spiritually by regular meditation on the Word and speaking in other tongues.
If the Holy Spirit is in you and all your spiritual blessings including healing and health are wrapped up in salvation, then where do you plug into? The Christ in YOU.
‘According to the power that works in US’.
