IN THE BEGINNING

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Genesis 1:1-3 KJV

There are many Christians who believe that the first three verses of Genesis are speaking about the literal creation of the earth. The truth is, they are describing things that happened in the Spirit realm before the physical earth ever existed.

Let me prove it to you. Verse 2 says ‘the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep’. The Hebrew words for formless and void are tohu, bohu which when translated means nothing, nothing. In other words, the earth had not yet been created.

Some believe the earth already had materiality but God had to ‘recreate’ the earth because it got messed up when He threw Satan and his angels out of heaven to the earth. The only problem with this being that neither one of these events ever took place.

‘The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters’ in verse 2 was not talking about the literal waters on the earth because the firmament had not yet seperated the waters from the waters which is when we see the first mention of ‘seas’ in the Bible.

The ‘waters’ here describe the nations or peoples of the world. Ever heard the term the ‘sea of humanity?’ Remember, God said He would ‘pour out his Spirit on all flesh.’ Like much most of the Old Testament it was written in metaphorical language that needs decoding.

Similarly, the darkness mentioned is spiritual and not a physical darkness. 2 Corinthians 4:6a says ‘For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.’

The Apostle Paul took his inspiration in 2 Corinthians 4:6 from the text in Genesis 1:3. Please understand this. The light was actually salvation and it would come out of darkness which represented the heart of man without Christ.

In John 1:4 it says about Jesus ‘in Him was life and the life was the light of men and the light shined in the darkness and the darkness could not comprehend (overcome) it. Think about it. When God said ‘let there be light’ there was no sun, moon or stars so again it had to have been spiritual light mentioned.

David said ‘the Lord is my light and my salvation’. David was drawing from Genesis 1:3. Jesus said ‘I am the light of the world’ also referencing Himself as the light spoken about by Moses in Genesis.

YAHWEH means ‘I am that I am’ and ‘I will be what I will be’. Jesus was the light. Jesus was the voice that commanded the light to shine out of darkness. Jesus was the Spirit of God moving over the waters . God is omnipresent don’t forget.

God orchestrated everything from the beginning in Christ because He was there before the beginning began.

John 1:1 ‘In the beginning was the Word and the word was with God and the word was God.’ He was the creator of all things.

Colossians 1:6 says ‘For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.’

John 1:2 ‘all things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made.’

He’s been there from the beginning and He has made His salvation plan known from the beginning. You can implicitly trust this creator of the universe with your future.
